Greetings Sue and list--

The "little thingy" is the jumper or jumper block.
What it covers--or 'jumps' between--are pins.
I suppose the analogy is to "jumper cables" that
create a circuit between a running vehicle's live
battery and charging system to a "dead" vehicle's
battery to assist the vehicle in starting.
The jumper block complete's the circuit that the
two pins are a part of.
