Without knowing the parts that are involved in the circuit that enable the on /off portion of the computer, the solution can be only be an educated guess.

If it were mine, I'd not spend money or time just changing parts in the hope of finding the trouble. The simple way would be to just plug and unplug the computer.

In the meantime I'd try to locate a schematic or wire diagram of the circuit and apply logical troubleshooting methods.

 This has happened to me twice. In the middle of the night the PC suddenly turns on and wakes me up. Scares the heck out of me. I turn it off immediately. I have anti-virus and a firewall security package. Testing shows no point of entry and no sign of any usage by an outside source. I swear its possessed! Any ideas???

If after you have checked all the other suggestions you still have the problem I would suggest you consider the power supply unit. On a couple of occassions I have had clients with a similar problem and it was resolved by replacing the PSU.
