My favorite was actually Wordstar Professional. Bought 4.5, 5.0 5.5 and 7.0
before migrating from DOS to Win95. I personally would give my kids a Win9x
system since that is current and what they use in schools. Old 486 (slow but
workable) Win9x machines are cheap.

Actually there are many fine word-processing programs from that era which
will run just fine on a 286 PC. PC Write from ButtonWare Software was
already mentioned by someone but MS Word version 4, MS Works 4,
WordPerfect 6 were all DOS based programs long before Windows came along.
