Another option to updating the bios is to purchase a "Promise" IDE
card.  When I upgraded my system to a "Promise" IDE card, I noticed a
marked improvement in my backups.  It was taking me over 2 minutes to
copy a large 700 Meg file across hard disk drives before I upgraded and
now it takes about 1 minute.
