Sometimes even this method can be deceptive.  The problem is that the
connector on the speakers (or on the sound card, for that matter) can be
  marginal.  If it's a problem with the speaker connection, then it may
work fine on one computer, but on another one with a less forgiving
connector, it may cause these problems.
