Three friends and I all bought Microtek V310 parallel port scanners when
they were on sale for $49 recently, and with this particular scanner it
MUST be powered on during bootup in order for the computer to see not
only the scanner, but to see the printer attached to the scanner.* The
scanners aren't defective, that's just the way they work. I presume KB's
situation is similar.

*I found this to be inconvenient, so I installed a 2nd parallel port in
3 of the 4 systems and connected the scanner to that new port.
Alternatively, the scanner software includes a small utility that
rescans the bus and hopefully finds the scanner after the system has
been powered up, but I found that it wasn't always successful, further
prompting me to go with the additional parallel ports.
