VGA
  640x480 resolution
  16 colours - 4 bits/pixel

SVGA
  800x600 resolution OR BETTER
  256 colours or more - 8/16/24 colour bits/pixel, some carss allow
24 bpp aligned on 32-bit boundaries for performance
  [To the extent that this term really means anything standard, it
may refer to the VESA interface definitions for how software can
select video resolution/colour depth modes.]

XGA
  1024x768 resolution
  8514/A adaptor register mappings
    these are typically followed by ATI and S3 chipsets, but conflict
with the standard COM4 I/O address range
