For the sake of brevity, This is to let you know I followed all the
suggestions in your reply. No luck.
Further investigation reveals:
In Computer Management/System, I get this message consistently:
"The Network Address Translator (NAT) was unable to request an operation of
the kernel-mode translation module. This may indicate misconfiguration,
insufficient resources, or an internal error. The data is the error code."
No information available at MS on this error.
This looks like an interesting and useful tool, but I understand very little
of its information.
In the file and printer sharing troubleshooter, I get this message:
"The troubleshooter detected that you might be using a computer name that
already exists on the network." I think I have followed the rules on this
and it's a spurious message.
My instincts are suggesting this might be one of those mysterious registry
problems.
During this process I discovered in Control Panel/System/Advanced that
checking "Performance" turns off all those visual effects and sliding menus
that annoy me so-I recommend this to all who would prefer a more familiar
interface.
I'm stumped for the moment. I'm going to email my ISP to see if this problem
is related to anything in their software.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

The only change I might suggest is leaving 192.168.0.1 as the installed
gateway in 'Gateway' on the Client.
Also, in Internet Properties, on the CLIENT 'Never Dial a connection' should
be checked and on the Lan Settings Tab, everything there should be
UNCHECKED.
