As a technician, I've found the L series printers to be undependable and
very light duty. Your experience is about average. I can't recommend
fixing it, nor do I recommend buying another. In my opinion, I'd buy a
rebuilt Laserjet III. They are workhorses, very reliable, and economical
to repair. For about the same cost as a new 6L or less, you'd be getting a
printer designed for (if memory serves) a 200,000 page duty cycle. That's
not before throwing it away, that's before investing around $100 for a
maintenance kit that will get you another 200K pages.
