David,
I also have had these noises and found out they are temporarily fixed by
thoroughly cleaning the underside of the cartridge cradle with any means you
have to access that area. The noise will go away for a few dozen prints but
invariably returns, and so on.:)

PS. My permanent fix was to replace the printer with an Epson 875DC Photo
printer. I love the photo output, (it is indiscernible from a lab photo
without a magnifying glass) but it is a little on the slow side for text.
