The most common cause of this is plain old dirt. Get a CD-ROM lens cleaner
at Radio Shack or a music store and run it through. Get a can of compressed
air at the same place and blow out the drive. For each CD with which you
have a problem, use a few drops of Windex or something similar and wipe
radially from the center, NOT circularly around the tracks, with a clean,
soft cloth.

Unfortunately, the second most common cause of this is a partial failure of
the electronics on the CD-ROM. You may be in for a trip to the repair shop.
