I'm not too sure how to get rid of it but I might be able to help
you disable it.

This utility starts and or places a icon on the tray which I
didn't like either so I did the following.

On the Sign on screen there is a button titled "Setup", Click on
it to open the setup screen. Click on Misc. and disable all that
is in the sign on area. This will disable the Messenger and not
put anything in the tray. I hope this will work for you.
