This has also been my experience with Win Modems in the last year. I think
the performance increase has to do more with improved Winmodems design and
software drivers then it does with the speed of the PC processor. I am
using a V 90 winmodem in P 166 with no noticeable performance hit. I did my
own bench marks and discovered with a Pentium Classic 166 ....just sitting
there I was using an additional 1 to 2 percent of CPU with the
Winmodem...for normal browsing and getting email simultaneously I was using
3 to 5 percent CPU time and for an all out dedicated download with email I
was using 7 to 8 percent of CPU time.....however I didn't notice any
change in performance...this is with 64 megs of Ram. ..and I only paid 20
dollars for this 56K Winmodem on sale. In the last six months I have
reversed my opinion of them from never get one to they are easy to use,
reliable and a great bargain. ...

One caveat >>> if you need to use your modem in DOS or Linux you need a
regular modem with it's own chip...my experience is that for this use a
non PNP regular modem is your best bet.
