The post, I think, comes from the BIOS on the mobo, and it checks the hardware.  It should say (although awfully quickly) if it doesn't find something, like the hard drive).   AnnaSummers

Did you get any POST (dos) screen at all with the old drive? Or any signs 
of disk hunting?
