look at the mobo, if you spot empty space labled "catch" (or something
similar) without any chip there, then the mobo doesn't have L2 catch
onboard. many old mobo don't have L2 catch to save the cost.

in your config.sys
try the following lines:

device=c:\dos\himem.sys
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems

If there were any exsiting line left refer to himem.sys and emm386.exe, try
change them to the above.
