What did you disconnect which enabled the motherboard to work?
Try a power-on with the power connected but the IDE cable
disconnected.

If it works, then power is not the problem.

If it doesn't, the HDD might be placing a heavy load on the
power supply, or disrupting the power good signal (the power
good wire is the first wire -- orange -- on the P-8 motherboard
power connector). If so, it's likely a faulty drive.

If the IDE data cable connection causes the problem, verify
that the drive select jumpers are set properly. Remember, WDC
drives have a different settings for Single drive and Master
drive with a Slave attached. Also verify the cabling, all
striped edges of the cable to pin #1. If it still doesn't work,
it is probably a faulty drive.

No; usually WDC drives are pretty good. You can go to WDC's
RMA site for service at:

   http://www.wdc.com/support/RMA/rmainfo.html

and check on the RMA procedure for warranty work. You can run
WDC's diagnostic to see what's wrong (try the drive in another
computer).

Try another (known working) hard drive and see if you can
replicate the problem.
