Besides the blinking lights and freeing up of a slot...

You can reset an external modem without rebooting or powering down your
computer (on occasion, a warm reboot is not enough).

You can move an external modem to another computer without cracking
the case. (For example, you could use it to test whether the modem
on a friend's system is faulty or whether it's a software problem.)

Less drain on your case's power supply. (Maybe your power supply is
just barely adequate.)
