What about making two partitions (each smaller than 8G) and putting them
back together with the old DOS JOIN command?  Would that work with newer
OS's?

I recall reading about this method of partioning a hard drive and then
presenting the pieces as one big drive.  As I recall, this was referred
to as "the dreaded JOIN command", and more sworn at than sworn by...
