I have a Gateway P5-133 and to get Windows to restart
without the computer shutting down the "Advanced Power
Management" must be disabled in the Cmos.
Setup is entered by pressing the "F1" on boot up. The
"Advanced Power Management" selection is under "Advanced"
then "Power Management Configuration".  Press enter, select
disable.  Press "ESC key" and cursor over to "Exit" and
select "Exit Saving Changes".
Hopefully this will take care of your friends problem.
