  The subnet mask divides the 32-bit IP address into "network" and
"host" portions -- in this case, 8 bits for network and the remaining
24 for host.  So the gateway and the machines each think they're on a
different network: 9.0.0.0, 1.0.0.0 and 2.0.0.0 respectively....
Essentially, this non-working configuration is lying to the machines
about how they're connected to each other; it's not really surprising
that it doesn't work.

  I bet, though, that you wouldn't have noticed a problem in this
case if you also had NetBEUI installed.  (And you might also find
that this would reduce traffic somewhat for local connections....)
