I am running win98se on an 8 gig hard drive with 512Meg Ram.

I have 2.9 gig free, but am constantly receiving disk full warnings and am unable to download mail (I use firefox) and cannot compact the folders due to lack of space. I tried to defrag, and received the same warnings - not enough space.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

I'm not sure why you're getting a full disk warning when you report having approximately 35% free space on your hard drive, but it's possible one or more things are going on here that are difficult to diagnose long distance with the information you've provided.

Just for starters and to ensure that unnecessary 'junk' and temporary files aren't contibuting to the problem, I suggest you download and use CCleaner available at FileHippo.com: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/; it's a great utility and the #1 ranked download at the site. The price is right too, as it's offered as donationware and is fully functional whether you put a buck in the jar or just say thank you to the developer. In my experience, I've found it safe to use and have never known it to cause any problems on the dozens and dozens of PCs I've massaged over the years.

FWIW, I gave up using Win98 after Windows 2000 was released (I was one of the many beta testers) and have never looked back unless absolutely necessary in order to fix a Win9x installation gone bad for clients, family and friends.

Believe-it-or-not, for several years I ran Windows 98 SE on a Gateway P-233 desktop with a single, tiny 1.5GB Seagate hard drive and full MS Office 2000 installation as well as many other add-on programs with room to spare. Due vigilance and careful planning along with the use of ASPACK to compress executables made it all posible.
