My son's computer has: 1) ATAPI CD-ROM, 2) internal IDE ZIP 3) 3.2 gig EIDE
hard drive, 4) 4.0 gig EIDE hard drive and 5) EIDE Tape Drive...

His secret is using his sound card's ide interface connector with the
CD-ROM. This connector apparently will only work with a CDROM (correct me
if wrong, maybe something to do with EIDE/APAPI or some such??), but it
does free up the motherboard ports. All are detected on bootup.

This is the "cheapest" option if you have a fairly standard sound card with
the IDE connector and are not planning on adding more hard drives.
