If you're buying now, which means for the socket 478, my inclination would
be to stick with the Northwood 800 MHz processor.  The problem for the
overclocker is that the Prescott runs warmer than the Northwood and most
motherboards won't let you adjust the voltage to the Prescott, as you can
with the Northwood.  At their stock speeds, the two are virtually identical
performance-wise, but the Northwood usually is a couple of dollars cheaper.

The Prescott won't really come into it's own until the new socket 775 boards
arrive and they start to ramp the speed up on this processor to around 4
GHz.

You probably want to browse the forums at some hardware enthusiasts' sites,
such as AnandTech, to see what people who have experimented with the two
have to say.
