An *omnidirectional* antenna sends signal in all directions, and that's
not what you want. A *directional* antenna focuses most of its power around
a specific axis, and so delivers more power in that one direction while
keeping the total within the limits allowed by the FCC,
So I would try a "YAGI" directional antenna at your house, instead of the
omnidirectional booster, and pointed towards theirs.

(A directional antenna's axis is surrounded by a diffuse "fresnel" zone,
and trees and other obstructions within this zone will reduce signal
strength. The less obstructed the view from antenna to client, the better.)

You can get even better results with a pair of "wireless bridges", one at
each house, each with a directional antenna pointed toward the other. These
are intended to provide a wireless link between two wired networks; the
wired network on either side could include a wireless router or access point
to serve nearby clients. But I don't know of amyone who makes such devices
for the home/small business market, so this approach could get expensive.
