different batteries on notebook

I was trying to get  a battery for an HP NX-9030 notebook and in the specs you can read.

11.1 volts on 6 cell batterry
14,8 volts on 8 cell battery

The two fit in the battery place of the notebook, but, I´m curious about if the notebook really works with that voltage range or if, inside  teh notebook the voltage is regulated to a level.
Any comment on these?
