Panasonic makes THE most reliable floppy drives.

For hard drives, that is more difficult to answer.  I have had appallingly
bad experiences with Seagate IDE hard drives, Maxtor also have had poor
reliablity in my experience.  I personally would go for Western Digital or
Quantum.  IBM are also very good, as are the soon to be ended Fujitsu.
