Take  a flashlight and shine it on the display if you can see the desktop
the inverter is bad or you can hook it up to an external monitor to see if
the video card is bad.

A friends sony laptop has just gone blank. When you power it up you
hear the fan running and LED's flashing and also the CD ROM running
but the display remains blank. Could be it that the some wires
running to the display are loose or cut somewhere?
