Look into either Adara or Microtek. They both are actually the same
company and have been in the scanner business for some time. I bought the
scanmaker X6 recently. The scanmaker X6 is very easy to use. Comes with
scanwiz in which you can use the scanner in sevral different modes of
operation. If you have USB support meaning your running windows 98(or have
upgraded your Win95 for USB) and you have the hardware to support it they
recently came out with this same scanner which supports usb. Scans would
not tie up your processor as much with the usb model which is a bit more
expensive.
Also the scanmaker x6 is a 36 bit scanner which means your colors will
come out more true. It also has an on/off switch on it which many scanners
don't have. This means you don't have to depend on software to turn off the
light scource. Most of the cheaper line of scanners are 30 bit which work
well if you can get them installed without any hitches.

I suggest buying locally if possible if you chose one of the lower priced
scanners. Some of them work well and some are a pain to install and get
them working. If this is the case you can return it.

I have done business with Adara and was very pleased with the Starlight I.
An older model that came with a large manual on how to use the scanner.
Most of the other manufactures don't include written manuals anymore. They
are on the install disk in PDF format.
