It looks like the 914v only has an analog input and uses a TN panel. You
can recognize a TN panel by how the quickly the image darkens when you tip
the panel back and looking at it from an angle below straight-on. These
relatively narrow viewing angles are a weak area for TN panels. Adjust the
monitor so it is facing as close to straight-on to you as possible.

As others have suggested, running this monitor at its native 1280x1024
resolution will give you the best results. Increase your window's and
application's default font sizes a bit, if text seems too small. (The 19"
LCDs probably run the lowest native resolution for their physical size,
since 17" LCDs use the same 1280x1024 resolution, and the 20" LCDs jump up
to a 1600x1200 native resolution.)

You might also want to turn on the ClearType font smoothing feature, if you
haven't tried this already. (Right click on your desktop, select
properties, select appearance tab, select effects button, and then under
smooth edges of screen fonts, select ClearType.) Many folks prefer this
effect on their LCD screens.

Many monitors are too bright with their default, out-of-the-box settings.
This is where a monitor testing application with some test screens can be
helpful for dialing in the contrast and brightness setting, in pariticular.
(Gamma setting can be helpful with finding the right balance, too.) The
Magic Tune application you mentioned sounds like it can help walk you
through this as well.
