Transferring software and hardware from Win Me to XP isn't going to make things much easier. You will have to update most software and a lot of drivers that may work on Me that won't work on XP, especially if you update to SP2, but even if you don't. Upgrade installs are rarely ever trouble free because you're buying whatever problems the prior installation had. If it were me I'd reformat the whole drive and start over from scratch with a fresh XP install. You used to be able to do full installs off win 9x upgrade disks, but I'm not sure on XP.

Trust me, Win Me was an orphan, never worked right, and is not something you should upgrade from if you want to have a trouble free future.
