  This information should be updated a little.  While the error
message hasn't changed, most modern motherboards use "flash" memory
instead of ROM to hold the BIOS code.  So the message could also
indicate:

a.  An attempt to update the flash memory image failed.

b.  The flash memory was updated with the wrong file -- perhaps a
BIOS for a different model of motherboard.

c.  Some malicious piece of software has wiped out the flash memory;
the CIH virus does this, for instance.
