Serious SoundCard problem

I own a PC running Windows 98 And I have an ESS688 SoundCard.
I've been having a lot of trouble with my PC's sound. My Computer has perfect sound in DOS and the DOS Shell. But I have absolutely NO sound in windows! I figure it must be a problem with the driver. But I have no way of updating it, because when I go to MY COMPUTER>HARDWARE my Soundcard isn't listed! I've tried everything I can thing of, I've even used the SEARCH FOR NEW HARDWARE option. But I can't figure it out. Somebody please help! |:,[]
