That is square one. The file command.com is in the root directory
of drive C after you use the command "format c: /s" to copy the
system files. It will say "starting windows95..." and typically displays
the splash screen momentarily before loading the dos command processor
portion and leaving you at the DOS prompt. From there you need to
write a config.sys file and autoexec.bat file that loads your cdrom (assuming
win95 is on cd). Most cdrom driver install diskettes will do this for you.
Then reboot and change to your cdrom and execute "setup.exe".
If you want absolutely no trace of win95 you can format the drive without the /s
option, but you will need a bootable diskette to load dos and access the cdrom drive.
If you are installing win3.11 for example, you should use a bootable dos 6.22 diskette.

I have installed a used hard drive on my 486. Is there a utility
software
program available that can clean it up (take it to square one) so windows
can be reinstalled. Ive
tried
using a floppy "crash disk" to "fdisk and format" ...no success. When i
restart "starting
windows
95" always comes up but windows is no longer in the directory.
