If you use an external DSL modem, which has ethernet ports, then you don't need
2 NIC's in any of your machines, and it won't have to be bogged down acting as a
router. You simply use a hub (or some DSL modems, like flowpoint 2200 series
have built-in 4 port hubs) to connect your computers together. You must get DSL
service that has more than one static IP in that case, or use a NAT solution.
Different vendors have different plans.

If you use an internal modem, then the hosting computer has to act as a router,
which will use some of its resources, and force you to potentially use some kind
of proxy software like wingate or sygate.

If you have the option, I would go aith an external modem, preferrably one with
multiple ethernet ports, and get DSL service with multiple IP's. Setup and
administration is a snap, you barely have to do anything.
