This is OFF LIST -- This type of post gets confusing enough with
people (like me, grin) making partial replies.

    I have run 1g to 8.4g drives on a couple of 486s and never had a bad
cluster...
    (And tomorrow am I going to be sorry I ever said THAT (grin))
I think OTHER THINGS, such as the power cords to the drives,  cause the
older
systems to have MORE than their fair share of bad clusters.
