Yes, Elizabeth, I believe there is a trick...  What I usually do with
PCI modems is to go into Device Manager (right click 'My Computer' ->
Properties -> Device Manager) and "disable COM2  in this hardware
profile". DO NOT REMOVE COM2 or else it will reinstall automatically
when you reboot.  After that shut down the computer, plug in the modem
and power computer on.  If it is P'n'P modem it should install on COM2.
If not, you may have to go through Add Hardware wizard as usually and
modem should install on the next COM port that is not active in the
current hardware profile. In our case it will be COM2.
