I had an APC 650 that I attached to a marine deep-cycle battery.

The original sealed battery went bad. I put the deep-cycle battery in the
garage (in order to vent the fumes to a safer place - remember that
lead/acid batteries can produce hydrogen gas), and ran wires to the APC
unit. I also installed an inline low-amp fuse at the battery as an extra
safety feature. So far it has seemed to work well, but I have not had the
power off for long periods of time.

The only thing that I think that you need to know is that the ups contains a
twelve volt battery. You have to hook it up using the correct polarity,
too, of course.

The newer APC units may or may not use twelve volt batteries, but they are
very annoying because you cannot turn off the &#*$ beeper like you can on
the older units. :(

Subject: [PCBUILD] UPS that's really useful

I am looking for a UPS that can be hooked up to a deep cycle 12VDC
battery. Knappco, I think, made an UPS some years ago that had
connectors on the outside for this. I can't find them anymore. Can
anyone recommend one?

ALternatively, any clues how to hook a run of the mill UPS to such a
battery safely?

Thank you,

Alan Davis
