My drive recognizes both 1.44M (HD) and 720K (DD) 3.5"s, and also
(with some help) the 1.6M format. Those drives are robust! Mine is 4
years old already, and is the only part I salvaged from the old pc...

The disk may simply be lacking operating system files... Was it
formatted with /s ? If not, then did you do a "sys a:" on it?

Some drives [usually the cheaper ones, but not only] refuse to
recognize older formats. Switch it to one that respects the state and
supports the art. Sets you back just about $20, I think.
