There are a number of tweak programs that do that.  MS's tweakui can remove it from the desktop, but not in Win 2K.  One of the best is Winboost 2001, which is available from www.magellass.com.  You'd have to have a look-see to find out if it runs on Win 2K.  It does run on Win Me, so it may work on your system.  Do a Google search for programs like that.
