Just to pick up on the "registered" theme.  Registered RAM uses a phase
locked loop (pll) to retime and recondition all the timing signals that the
memory uses.  It ensures that in high capacity modules 256, 512 and 1Gb all
the chips and modules are syncronsied correctly.  In short it is a method of
ensuring data integrity.
