The only problem I see is the possibility that the 486
doesn't have a Plug and Play BIOS.

Some Plug and Play modems (including 56K) don't like to
be plugged into a non Plug and Play motherboard.

Any decent 56K modem that does not require Plug and Play
should work fine.
