Hi,

Tuesday 14 October I sent maelstrom.stjohns.edu/pcsoft a message asking for help on a particularly frustrating problem with MSN 8. They suggested I resend it to PCbuild. In troubleshooting, I have replaced the modem/drive with new ones and the system has passed all the diagnostic tests I have run to date.

It's blowing my mind - it's my best desktop computer. I've run out of ideas.

I still can't get on the internet & MSN 8 with my desktop. 

 

It's a MSN problem with the desktop because I can get on MSN 8 using my laptop, the same MSN 8 user name & password, phone line and wall outlet as used on the desktop..

 

I have been fighting this for several weeks now and have:

 

1-Reinstalled regsvr32 softpub.dll 

2-Removed MSN Messenger 6 and installed 5 (per MSN instructions)

3-Removed and reinstalled MSN 8 many times

4-Ran sfc/scannow verifying protected files were present and current.

5-Tried to run psreg.dns.com - couldn't find on the desktop or laptop

6-Checked security settings - all ok

7-Reinstalled XP operating system

7-Removed MSN account info per MSN instructions, but can't reinstall it.

    It appears to be dialing but the phone line remains grounded.

 

In addition I:

 

A-Bought and installed a new modem/driver

B-Replaced phone cables with known good ones

C-Verified wall outlet is good 

 

The machine is a Dell Dimension 8200 machine with a 1.9 GHz CPU, 512 MHz memory and all the other bells and whistles running Windows XP Home.

 

It shouldn't be this hard if they want people to use their product.

 

Please help.
