My wife's computer started acting flakey and I decided to
replace the hard drive. I am having trouble reinstalling
Windows (it has failed on two different versions of
W98 and one of W ME). Mostly it installs, but then
I get a message near the end of the installation that
rundll has caused a problem; then later it is unable
to install some JAVA cab files. Then, when it boots, it
says there is a registry error and reboots. Then it
hangs. I suspect the problems are a result of a bad
install. (Almost the same problem with all os's.)

I am trying to determine if this is a hardware problem
which requires a new mb (it is as if the files are not
being copied quite properly, as if the address lines
work intermittently) or something else. I do not
want to upgrade hardware unless necessary.

To get to the point, during the install I got this error
message which may shed some light on what the
problem is:

INSTALLTRANSLATOR: Unable to load ODBC
       control panel (odbccp32.dll):

31: A device attached to the system is not functioning

What is the meaning of the last line?? Is the "device" a
hardware device or a software device?

The system is an Athlon 1.2gighz on an Asus a7v133 mb.
WD 40gig drive.

I have had trouble installing ME before on the high speed
ATA100 line, but the installation never got beyond copying
the files to the hard drive, so this does not look like the
same problem.

TIA
