On older stuff, I've had all sorts of compatibility problems.
Good old boards came with a chart of what size chips
you could use, where you HAD to put them, and even
if they could be single or double sided.

On one old board, I even had to get the same sized chips
(from different manufacturers) into CERTAIN slots before
they would work together...  (IE: 4 times 16M)
Newer boards "might" be much more forgiving, but I have
read all sorts of warnings in some new motherboard manuals
on this very topic...
The bottom line is, get and read your manual if at all possible,
and check the WEB site of the MB maker to see what they
found out AFTER they made it...
(And only buy where you can return/exchange.)
