> Hello i recently accquired an old computer 486sx. Not really
interested in using the computer just the hard drive. I want to use it
as a small second hard drive for music. The problem is when i put it
in this computer as a slave to the main hd and started up the computer
it reads it as a slave drive and begins to post. But hangs up after it
loads the cd-rom driver.
-----------------------------------
Is the computer loading the CD-ROM driver from config.sys &
autoexec.bat? This is probably not
necessary if the CD is current. Win98 should be able to handle it
without loading 'DOS-level'
drivers. In any case, since it seems to hang at the point where the
CD drivers load, you may need
to reassign the CD-ROM's drive letter. Go to the Device Manager, open
up the CD-ROM area, go to
the specific device properties pages, then the settings tab. At the
bottom, assign a 'start' and 'end' drive letter higher in the alphabet
than the hard disks. Just be aware that programs expecting to use
a CD at the previous location may not work unless re-installed or with
the appropriate ini file or
registry key(s) adjusted. (Sometimes it is easier to edit an ini file
than to reinstall, but this is not
always the case.)
