Greetings David and list--

The 'short of it' is that access to \\<computer1\SharedDocs has been
restored.

David's suggestion--that usernames and passwords on computers across the
LAN did not match--was mostly correct.

[from David Gillett's post . . .
The next best choice is to make sure that the accounts you use exist on
all of the machines in your network, preferably with the same password
on any selected account name on every machine. I suspect this is what
has broken -- the user account you log into on the 98SE machine either
doesn't exist on the gateway machine, or exists but has a different
password set. . . . end of quoted material.]

I set up a new user, and was able to access shared folders and printer
on the machine in question with no problem. The mystery remains as
to why using the same usernames and passwords would not grant access.

The "cure" involved re-creating the users--fortunately all but one that
displayed
a middle initial [my administrator-level account], but required none as a
username
--and then logging on again. Luckily, none of the users had a great many
saved
docs, etc. so it was not a great hardship, but it is still a mystery to me
why the
Win98 machine required a password to access \\<computer1\ when all users
and passwords remained unchanged.

Thanks to David for his direction, and I'd still be interested in knowing
how/why
this occurred in the first place, if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks to all.
