  The cable modem is *probably* designed to connect to a single PC's
NIC using an ordinary straight-through cable.  So to connect it to a
hub, you'd need *either* to use a cross-over, or (better) connect it
to an "uplink" port on the hub, which will be already wired as a
crossover.  [Not all hubs have such a port.]

  [A few cable modems *might* be exceptions to this; without checking
out the manual for the specific device, the advice above is only an
"educated guess".]
