I made a set of parabolic antennas to boost my signal to my notebook upstairs.  My prob was that my office, where the router is, is behind a fireplace wall.

It worked well & I have anywhere from 65-80% signal strength now- up from approx. 50-65%.  I made mine from 1/4" hardware cloth & styrofoam forms.
