I just set up an old Grid 286 laptop.

In order to run Windows 3.1, 1 MB of RAM is the
minimum required. With a 286, you can only run Windows
in the Standard mode. Write will work just fine in the
Standard mode.

You need a 386 to run in the Enhanced mode.
