I tried to hook up a Mustek 600 II parallel-port scanner that
currently works fine on another new Pentium II Quantex
PC (both OS's are Windows98). I went to install new hardware
as windows98 doesn't recognize scanners as plug-n-play,
and installed the device (twain) drivers & software that I have done
many times. I keep getting "flatbed scanner not ready"; I even put a
copy of the drivers in c:\windows\systems to see if that helped;
The port default setting in the bios is "SPP"; I also tried the ECP,
EPP,
& "normal" settings with the same result each time. I thought I had a
"dead" parallel port, but then I hooked up my PP HP693c deskjet to the
parallel port and it was detected , installed & works fine with
bi-communication! Can a portion of the circuitry of a parallel port
be dead, i.e., letting the printer work, but not the scanner. Yes, I
tried
accessing the scanner from no less than 10 different image programs &
always scanner "not ready". I'm using the exact cord that came with it
and after failing to install it to new pc, rehooked it to old pc and it
started right up so it's not the scanner or the scanner cable. Any ideas

from anyone? Thanks,
   Rob Chew
